Fancy Track Snail (Clithon sowerianum) — Description
The Fancy Track Snail, scientifically known as Clithon sowerianum, is a small but stunning nerite snail favored in aquascaping and planted freshwater tanks.
Appearance & Origin
These snails are celebrated for their eye-catching, bold patterns—contrasting black or dark streaks or spots decorate their bright, thick shells, making them stand out against lush green aquarium backdrops.
They hail from the brackish estuaries of the Indo-Pacific, lending them both visual appeal and resilience.
Size & Temperament
They remain compact at around 2 cm, ideal for nano tanks or community setups.
Clithon sowerianum is a peaceful species. Its shell offers protection from curious tankmates like shrimp, other snails, or non-aggressive fish.
Algae Grazers & Cleaning Crew
These snails are efficient algae eaters, voraciously grazing biofilm, diatoms, and surface algae across tank glass, rocks, and decor.
Being unable to reproduce in strictly freshwater (they require brackish conditions for larvae), they’re a responsible choice for hobbyists wanting natural algae control without risk of population overrun.
Care & Compatibility
Best kept in well-established, mature aquariums where biofilm and algae growth are steady.
As with other nerites, they will occasionally lay small, white egg capsules in freshwater tanks—no hatchlings will emerge unless exposed to brackish water.
Generally hardy, though less tolerant of poor conditions compared to other snails, so stable water parameters and good aquarium maintenance are essential.
